About Play Billions

Welcome to "Play Billions" - a fun and educational web application that lets you experience the thrill of having a billionaire's wealth at your fingertips!

Of course most billionaires do not have the physical cash in their bank account. It's all in different investments such as stocks, properties, etc. This game assumes that the billionaire sells all of their stocks and assets today with the cash in bank account; giving you the opportunity to spend it.

What is this app about?

This application is designed to give you a glimpse into the world of extreme wealth. By selecting a billionaire, you can virtually spend their fortune on a variety of luxury items and experiences. It's a playful way to understand the scale of wealth that billionaires possess and how it compares to everyday items and even other expensive purchases.

How does it work?

  1. Choose a billionaire from the dropdown menu.
  2. Browse through the catalog of luxury items and experiences.
  3. Click "Buy" to purchase the items and get the receipt.
  4. Watch as the total spent and remaining amount update in real-time.
  5. Try to spend all of the billionaire's fortune if you can!

Is this real?

No, this is a simulation for entertainment and educational purposes only. The billionaires' net worth is based on publicly available estimates. The products and their prices are also approximations based on luxury items that exist in the real world.

What's the point?

The main goals of this application are:

  • To get you thinking before you acquire such wealth; preventing you from squandering it in real life.
  • To provide a fun and interactive way to understand the scale of billionaire wealth
  • To spark conversations about wealth, luxury, and economic inequality
  • To offer a unique perspective on the purchasing power of extreme wealth

Remember, while it's fun to imagine spending like a billionaire, the app also serves as a stark reminder of the vast wealth disparity in our world. We encourage you to reflect on these issues and consider how such wealth could be used to address global challenges.

Inspiration

One of our key inspirations for creating Play Billions was the hit TV show "Billions" - a drama series that portrays the world of high finance and billionaire culture.

About Billions (TV Series)

"Billions" is a critically acclaimed television series that premiered in 2016, focusing on the high-stakes world of finance, power, and wealth. The show follows the intense rivalry between hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (played by Damian Lewis) and U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (played by Paul Giamatti).

What We Learned

  • The complex relationship between wealth and power in modern society
  • The lifestyle and mindset of the ultra-wealthy
  • The various ways billionaires spend and invest their fortunes
  • The moral and ethical challenges that come with extreme wealth

While "Billions" is a dramatic interpretation of billionaire life, it helped shape our understanding of how to present wealth in an engaging and thought-provoking way. The 'Play Billions' game aims to capture some of that same fascination with extreme wealth while adding an educational and interactive element.

Note: Play Billions is not affiliated with or endorsed by the TV show "Billions" or its creators. It is a cultural touchstone that helped inspire this educational project.
